BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival 0

Posted in Culture, Film, Nightlife, Parties and Events

From the 19th – 29th March, BFI Flare Festival (the relatively new name for BFI’s London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival) will be held at London’s British Film Institute, on the southbank. In its 29th year, the event continues to highlight thought-provoking issues that are still prevalent today, across the world, encouraging healthy debate and discussion.

Kicking off with a bold entry, the Opening Night Gala on Thursday 19th March, I Am Michael is based on the true story of a pioneering gay rights activist who betrays his homosexuality. Starring James Franco, it’s a fascinating insight into the issues surrounding sexuality.

The Closing Night Gala film, Out to Win, is a brilliant documentary with interviews from famous sports personalities, including Martina Navratilova and Jason Collins. Touching on the still taboo subject of homosexuality, it explores the trials and tribulations of equality in the world of the sporting elite.

Perhaps most touching and brave is the Centrepiece Screening, Stories of Our Lives. A collection of true stories from LGBTI Kenyans, the film uncovers the struggles these people deal with, in a country where it is dangerous to expose homosexuality.

1). Hearts – films about love, romance and friendship
2). Bodies – stories of sex, identity and transformation
3). Minds – reflections on art, politics and community

The May Fair Hotel is proud to be the official hotel partner of the festival for the 6th consecutive year.
